The "Barny" Book - circa 1968

Mention the word "Barney" today, and most people think of that purple dinosaur on TV; a few think of a fashionable clothing store in New York, some older folks think of Fred's good friend and neighbor (yes, Barney Rubble, Betty's husband), but for a select few of the Ol' Gang, the word Barney means just one thing.........

Norbert P. Barny, Director, Sales & Service

Mr. Barny completed the Merchant Marine efficiency training program in 1932 and was qualified to serve as both an Engineering and Deck Officer, and spent the next four years at sea in various capacities. In 1936 he joined the National Radiator Co. and rose to the position of Sales Manager.

He joined The Bendix Corporation in 1943 and in 1946 he was made chief sales engineer at Bendix Navigation and Control Division and then in 1950 was appointed assistant sales manager.

When we became a full operating division in 1952, he became Director, Sales and Service. He is responsible for all of our sales and service activities.

Mr. Barny is a member of the American Ordnance Association, Air Force Association, and American Management Association.

During Norbert's tenure at Bendix EPD, we won and provided one of the largest and most sophisticated electric power systems ever manufactured. It was for the Boeing 747 family of commercial transport jets. Bendix EPD electric power equipment provided quality electrical power for the 747-100, -200 & -300 family of jets. (It was sadly replaced by a Sundstrand system on the 747-400 jets)

Also during Norbert's tenure a book was assembled that provided a detailed technical understanding and operation of the 747 electrical system, along with a brief history and biographical synopsis of the fine people who were involved in it's development, manufacture and support. This book became affectionately know as "the Barney Book". The book was prepared about 1968 and offers a wonderful glimpse at the golden days of Bendix EPD, the facilities and its people. I am very glad that a copy of this book still survives today (in fact the copy used here belonged to Robert C. Eckenfelder)! Herewith are some great glimpses back at Bendix Electric Power Division.

From the Vault

Here's another group of ol' photos and memories. These are from a "big bunch" of ol' photos that Jim Widdis rescued and sent to me (Thanks, Jim!). They all seem to be from Bendix Management Club events, but I'm not too sure which photo goes with which dinner. If you can help, please do. Here's some more classics from this group.

Back in the 60's (you remember the 60", don't you?), Bendix EPD ran quite a few ads in Aviation Week & Space Technology. Here are some examples of the ads showing our great product line.
These ads are from the January 1961 edition of AW&ST. Bendix used to take out full page ads in the early sixties. In those days, Bendix was the largest advertiser of aircraft electric power.

Many thanks to EVERYONE for providing so many of the photos and memories shown here.

If you have anything to contribute (especially ol' copies of the Output or Management Newsletter), please forward it to the Webmaster. Old photos, pictures from past events, copies of announcements, anything than can be sent electronically.
